Son La invests in building cultural, sports facilities in ethnic minority areas

Implementing the first phase of the National Target Programme on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas for 2021-2025, Son La province has invested in building cultural and sports facilities and equipment in ethnic minority inhabited hamlets. Many cultural houses have been completed and put into use, meeting the people's needs for cultural enjoyment and sports practice.

Earlier this year, the Mong ethnic people of Hang Dong hamlet, Hang Dong commune, Bac Yen district were happy when the hamlet's cultural house was inaugurated. The 200sq.m facility was built at a cost of nearly 689 million VND (28,390 USD) sourced from the national target programme. The hamlet has more than 60 households, with close to 400 people. In addition to the new cultural house, amplifiers and speakers will be invested, making locals very excited. The cultural house is a place for them to organise entertainment and cultural events, meetings and community activities, and do exercise, thus enhancing solidarity.

Bui Ngoc Thang, head of the Culture and Information Division of Bac Yen district, said Bac Yen has 15 communes and one town, with over 70,000 people from seven ethnic groups. Of whom, over 95% are ethnic minorities. Over the past two years, from the funding of the national target programme, the district has supported 310 million VND (12,773 USD) for traditional art teams in hamlets of Ta Xua and Hang Dong communes. It has also helped build cultural and sports facilities and provided equipment for Trung Son and Suoi Song hamlets of Song Pe commune, Suoi Ngang hamlet of Chieng Sai commune and Chong Tra hamlet of Hang Dong commune. Currently, the division is coordinating with relevant units to provide cultural equipment for 58 hamlets. This work is expected to be completed by the end of December.

More than 80 households in Song hamlet, Yen Hung commune, Song Ma district now have a 100sq.m solid hamlet cultural house worth 850 million VND (35,000 USD) sourced from the national target programme. People are very happy because they have a place to join cultural and art exchanges, and play sports regularly.

Since 2022, Song Ma district has supported the building of 45 hamlet cultural houses, with a total value of over 10 billion VND (412,000 USD) from the national target programme, contributing to increasing the number of hamlets with cultural houses to 341. In addition, the district also provided 269 million VND (11,000 USD) for traditional art teams of hamlets in Chieng Cang and Na Nghiu communes, and equipment for the cultural house of Lom Hom hamlet, Muong Lam commune.

In the 2021-2023 period, also from this fund, hundreds of cultural houses have been repaired, built and put into use, increasing the rate of hamlets with community houses in the province to 92.43%, or 2,319 hamlets. The cultural houses have met the needs of cultural enjoyment and improved the spiritual life of ethnic minorities, while helping localities complete the new-style rural area building criteria.

The provincial Committee for Ethnic Affairs is advising the provincial People's Committee to propose ministries and central agencies soon issue, amend and supplement circulars and documents guiding the implementation of projects, subprojects and component contents of the National Target Programme on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, so that localities have a basis to devise plans for effective implementation.

By 2025, Son La province strives to have 96.85% of the total hamlets with cultural houses. Traditional cultural and art teams and clubs will operate regularly with high quality, creating conditions for people to increase their level of cultural enjoyment and improve the quality of the movement "All people unite to build a cultural life."
