Yen Chau district’s Long Phieng commune recognised as new-style rural area

The People’s Committee of Yen Chau district on January 12 held a ceremony to announce the decision of the Chairperson of the provincial People’s Committee recognising Long Phieng commune as a new-style rural area in 2023.

The mountainous commune shares more than 3km of borderline with Houaphanh province of Laos. It encompasses 10 hamlets with 1,422 households and 5,438 people belonging to four ethnic groups, of whom ethnic minorities account for more than 52%.

In implementing the national target programme on new-style rural area building, the communal People’s Committee assigned specific tasks to hamlets, as well as officials in charge of the work.

Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, hands over the new-style rural area certificate to Long Phieng commune.

Since 2012, Long Phieng commune has built nearly 17km of rural roads and 52.5km of intra-field roads with total funding of more than 67 billion VND (2.7 million USD), with nearly 9 million VND contributed by local residents and the remainder from the State coffer.

As of December 2023, it had completed 19 criteria and 57 targets set for a new-style rural area. Its annual income per capita surpassed 42.3 million VND and agricultural production value reached over 85 million VND per hectare. The rate of workers with regular jobs hit 94.5%, and all local households gained regular, safe access to electricity.

Schools and medical facilities have satisfied standards, and there have been no temporary and dilapidated houses to date. The poverty rate stands at 12.83%.

An art performance celebrates the event.
