Gia Phu commune declared free of African swine fever

An appraisal team from the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, and Fisheries on December 3 declared that Gia Phu commune meets the conditions to be officially recognissed as free from African swine fever (ASF).

The appraisal team declares Gia Phu commune free of African swine fever.

Previously, on August 17, 2025, pigs in the Chat Moi hamlet were suspected of being infected, and laboratory tests confirmed they were positive for the ASF virus. The commune People’s Committee, in coordination with relevant authorities, promptly established quarantine zones, culled all infected pigs, and carried out public awareness campaigns to ensure residents strictly followed the “Five Don’t”: don’t hide the disease, don’t buy, sell, slaughter, or consume sick pigs, don’t dispose of dead pigs in the environment, and don’t feed pigs with untreated leftover food.

By October 13, 2025, a total of 154 pigs, weighing 6,053 kg, from 23 households across several hamlets, had been culled. Comprehensive sanitation, disinfection, and lime application measures were carried out at pigsties to prevent further spread of the disease.

After an on-site inspection, the appraisal team concluded that Gia Phu commune meets all requirements to be declared free from African swine fever, enabling local residents to safely resume pig farming and promote sustainable development.
