Muong Hong Seed Farm ensures safe, reliable plant varieties for farmers

In agricultural production, plant varieties are considered a decisive “input” that directly affects crop yield and product quality. In recent years, Muong Hong Seed Farm, under the Centre for Agricultural Extension and Digital Transformation of Son La province’s Department of Agricul

Seedlings are nurtured in net-house systems, ensuring stable growing conditions.

Covering an area of more than 14 hectares, Muong Hong Seed Farm is systematically planned, including administrative areas, nurseries, and experimental zones for research and variety testing. Of this, the nursery occupies over 13 hectares, while the experimental area covers 1 hectare. The farm currently operates two net houses and two semi-automatic irrigation systems, with seven staff members and technicians directly involved in production.

A wide variety of seedlings are produced here, adapted to local climate and soil conditions. These include fruit trees such as mango, longan, avocado, peach, plum, pomelo, orange, jackfruit, tangerine, and guava; industrial crops like coffee (THA1, Cartimo varieties) and tea; and forestry species such as teak, chinaberry, pine, magnolia, and macadamia.

The seedling production process is carried out in a systematic, closed-loop manner, from selecting mother plants and seeds to propagation, cultivation, and quality inspection before distribution. Each stage is strictly controlled to ensure clear origin, strong growth, and adaptability to natural conditions. In particular, the selection of elite mother plants and seeds is conducted rigorously to meet criteria for yield, quality, and pest and disease resistance.

During the nursery stage, factors such as moisture, nutrition, environmental conditions, and pests are closely monitored. The semi-automatic irrigation system ensures timely and uniform water supply, reducing labour and improving care efficiency. Thanks to the synchronised application of technical solutions, the rate of seedlings meeting quality standards for distribution reaches about 85%, while the post-planting survival rate is 90–95%, higher than many unverified sources available on the market.

Traders come to purchase seedlings at Muong Hong Seed Farm.

Engineer Tran Thi Hieu from the Son La Centre for Agricultural Extension and Digital Transformation stated: “To produce high-quality seedlings, we carefully manage every step, from selecting seeds and soil to nurturing young plants. Carefully selected, disease-free seedlings adapt well to natural conditions, helping reduce risks, maintain stable yields, and improve farmers’ economic efficiency.”

Each year, Muong Hong Seed Farm supplies more than 1 million industrial crop seedlings, over 600,000 forestry seedlings, and 60,000–70,000 fruit tree seedlings. In addition to serving local farmers, its seedlings are distributed to many other provinces, including Gia Lai, Quang Ngai, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, and Dien Bien.

Having worked with the farm’s seedlings for many years, Lu Thi Kinh from Na Ngan hamlet, Chieng Sinh ward, shared: “I started sourcing seedlings from Muong Hong Seed Farm in 2022 to supply local farmers. Each time, I import 15,000 to 25,000 seedlings, usually every other day. The seedlings here grow well, have high survival rates, and are trusted and preferred by farmers, so the sale is stable.”

Vuong Quoc Hoa, Deputy Director of the Son La Centre for Agricultural Extension and Digital Transformation, said that in 2026, the centre aims to produce more than 3 million seedlings. Therefore, it is accelerating the application of scientific and technical advances and developing new plant varieties. At the same time, the centre is expanding production areas to supply high-quality seedlings for agricultural production.

Beyond being a seedling production facility, Muong Hong Seed Farm also serves as a “bridge” bringing scientific and technical advances closer to farmers, creating a solid foundation for the long-term development of local agriculture.

Every day, thousands of seedlings are distributed from Muong Hong Seed Farm to farmers. These healthy, high-quality plants play an important role in improving production efficiency and moving toward sustainable agricultural development.
