Son La promotes climate-resilient coffee cultivation

Arabica coffee has been cultivated in Son La since the 1990s, primarily in former Mai Son and Thuan Chau districts, and Son La city. After overcoming many challenges, coffee has emerged as one of the province’s key crops, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for farmers, driving agricultural restructuring, increasing value, and expanding export markets.

To protect and sustainably develop coffee cultivation, provincial authorities have directed local departments and communities to promote the application of scientific and technical advances, implement sustainable farming practices aligned with international standards, transition toward organic production, and expand shade tree intercropping models. These efforts aim to improve climate resilience, particularly in mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, cold spells, and frost - all of which negatively affect coffee yield and quality.

Son La has prioritised research and development of new varieties, replanting efforts, and the transfer of organic cultivation techniques meeting international standards. Agroforestry models have been expanded, promoting intercropping with shade trees, soil restoration, and enhanced plant resilience. The province has introduced supportive policies for financing, and building value chains connecting “businesses – farmers – markets,” while also focusing on the development of specialty coffee.

In 2024, the provincial Farmers’ Union and the provincial Centre for Agricultural Technology, in collaboration with Binh Dien Fertilizer JSC, implemented the "Smart Coffee Cultivation Adapting to Climate Change" project in Chieng Coi ward. From 2021 to 2024, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) carried out the project “Enhancing Climate Resilience for Poor Coffee-Growing Communities” in Dien Bien and Son La provinces.

Over the past five years, Son La has replanted, rejuvenated, and grafted 2,818 hectares of coffee. New high-yield, high-quality Arabica varieties like TH1, TN7, TN9, and trial cultivars H1 and Starmaya which are suited to local soil and climate conditions have been introduced. As a result, Son La has become the largest Arabica-growing region in Vietnam.

By 2025, the province’s coffee-growing area is expected to reach 24,300 hectares (an increase of 5,448 ha), with an output of over 37,700 tonnes (up nearly 11,000 tonnes from 2021). Among this, 1,120 hectares are dedicated to specialty coffee, and 23,448 hectares are certified under international sustainability standards (4C, Rainforest Alliance), with many VietGAP and organic models replicated. Over 1,560 farming households participate in two high-tech growing zones. As a result, Son La’s coffee brand has been increasingly recognised, with geographical indication protection and five OCOP (One Commune, One Product) certified products, including one with a 5-star national rating.

One of the province’s five major industrial coffee processing facilities, Phuc Sinh Son La JSC, is working with 876 farming households in Chieng Mai and Muong Chanh communes to establish a high-tech coffee cultivation zone spanning over 670 hectares. Additionally, it partners with 1,600 households to cultivate more than 2,000 hectares of coffee, producing 15,000-18,000 tonnes of fresh cherries annually, equivalent to around 4,000 tonnes of exportable green coffee beans.

Over three years, the GIZ-supported project has achieved impressive results in Son La, improving capacity for 3,500 smallholder farmers. It focused on high-quality seed development, with three nursery models and 16 hectares of elite seed mother gardens established.

Through proactive replanting, the application of sustainable organic farming practices, and close collaboration with enterprises, Son La’s coffee sector has developed a resilient production ecosystem capable of withstanding climate change. This marks a significant technical advancement and a necessary direction to protect the coffee crop, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and affirm the Son La coffee brand in the global market.
