Son La to plant 99.504 hectares of new forest

The People’s Committee of Son La has officially issued Decision No. 528/QD-UBND on the plan and assignment of units to implement compensatory afforestation using funds contributed by project investors to the provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund in 2026 (Phase 1).

Under the plan, 99.504 hectares of forest will be planted in Muong Gion commune. The implementation period is from 2026 to 2030, with tree planting scheduled during the 2026 afforestation season. The estimated budget exceeds 17 billion VND (654,604 USD), sourced from compensatory afforestation payments made by investors of seven projects that were approved by the provincial People’s Committee to convert forest land to other purposes and required to contribute to the provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund.

Specifically, the projects include the Xuan Nha Hydropower Plant (8.61 ha); transport infrastructure projects in the Moc Chau area (4.80 ha); Muong La (14.43 ha); Quynh Nhai (over 61 ha); Provincial Road 105 project in Sop Cop commune (2.25 ha); and the inter-commune road connecting Long He and Phong Lap (8.334 ha).

Officers from the Forest Protection Sub-Department Area I and residents of Dong Tam hamlet, Quynh Nhai commune, clear vegetation.

To ensure the quality of the newly planted forests, the provincial People’s Committee has assigned specific responsibilities to relevant agencies. The Forest Protection Sub-Department Area I will act as the investor, directly preparing technical designs and cost estimates, and organising implementation, management, and protection of the new forest areas.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment will be responsible for monitoring, appraisal, and close supervision of the implementation process. The People’s Committee of Muong Gion commune will coordinate land allocation and mobilise local residents to participate in forest care and protection.

The implementation of this plan will help restore lost forest areas, protect water resources, prevent soil erosion, and improve the ecological environment in the upstream region of Son La.
