Tai Nung pear in Phieng Khoai strengthens market presence

In June, on the hillsides of Phieng Khoai commune, Tai Nung pear orchards begin harvesting. After more than 10 years of taking root in this land, under the hands of dynamic farmers who dare to think and act, the pear trees have gradually affirmed their brand in the market thanks to superior quality, safe production processes, and clear traceability.

Blessed by nature with a suitable climate and soil conditions, Phieng Khoai is an ideal area for developing Tai Nung pear trees. After many years of care and variety selection, local residents have created orchards that produce fruits with a mild sweetness, crisp texture, juiciness, attractive appearance, and consistent quality.

To enhance product value, pear growers in the commune have focused on applying safe VietGAP production standards, using organic fertilizers, and managing pests through biological methods, gradually meeting increasingly demanding market requirements.

Cooperatives and households have boldly invested in irrigation and standard cultivation systems, while also forming partnerships with businesses, supermarkets, and clean food retail chains for selling peers.

Kien Cuong Cooperative is one of the pioneering units in developing the Tai Nung pear growing area in Phieng Khoai commune. With 18 members and more than 50 hectares of pear orchards, and an estimated output of over 500 tonnes per season, the cooperative has built a production-to-consumption value chain, contributing to increased product value.

At present, the cooperative provides jobs for more than 20 workers with an average income of 300,000–400,000 VND (11.4-15.2 USD) per working day from harvesting and packaging.

Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Deputy Director of Kien Cuong Cooperative, said that depending on size and quality, pears are sold at prices ranging from 25,000 to 50,000 VND (0.95-1.9 USD) per kilogramme. As the trend toward green consumption and clean food grows, the cooperative’s products are often sold out.

Traders and supermarket systems come directly to the orchards to purchase. In addition, the cooperative actively organises livestreaming sessions on Facebook, TikTok, and other digital platforms to promote its products. Each session helps connect with new customers, expand the market, and increase the value of the pears.

Phieng Khoai’s Tai Nung pears are supplied to clean food stores across many provinces and cities.

As a member of Kien Cuong Cooperative, the family of Phan Dinh Son in Thanh Yen 2 hamlet currently manages 5 hectares of Tai Nung pears, with an estimated output of more than 40 tons. All products are supplied to various clean food chains and reputable distribution systems in Hanoi and several other provinces and cities.

Son shared that the harvest season runs from mid-June to the end of July. After harvesting, the pears are classified into four sizes: mini, small, large, and VIP, to meet different customer segments.

Before being sold, each pear is labelled with a traceability stamp. This labelling is a commitment to product quality, origin, and the growers’ responsibility to consumers. This transparency has helped build trust and ensured long-term partnerships with distributors.

Local residents sort and pack Tai Nung pears for shipment to provinces and cities nationwide.

Phieng Khoai commune currently has more than 90 hectares of pear orchards, with an estimated annual output of nearly 1,000 tonnes. Standardising processes from production, harvesting, and classification to traceability has helped Tai Nung pears from Phieng Khoai meet the requirements of modern distribution channels, improve competitiveness, and gradually build a sustainable brand.

Tran Nam Trung, Chairman of Phieng Khoai People’s Committee, stated that the commune identifies Tai Nung pear as one of its key crops, playing an important role in agricultural commodity development and increasing local incomes.

In the coming time, it will continue to expand cultivation areas according to planning, encourage farmers to apply safe production processes, strengthen linkages with enterprises and cooperatives, promote trade and product branding, and apply digital transformation in traceability and agricultural product consumption to enhance value and competitiveness in the market.

Tai Nung pear cultivation has helped many households in Phieng Khoai commune increase their income.

From a fruit crop grown in a border region, Tai Nung pears from Phieng Khoai are now present in many supermarkets and clean food chains and are well received by consumers in various provinces and cities.

The combination of product quality, safe production, transparent origin, and innovative marketing methods is creating a solid foundation for the Tai Nung pear brand of Phieng Khoai to grow further and become one of the notable agricultural products of Son La province.
