Vice Chairman of provincial People's Committee inspects flooding situation in Son La city

Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Cong and a working delegation inspected the flooding situation in Phieng Nghe hamlet, Chieng Den commune, Son La city on July 31.

Due to the impact of storm Prapiroon, the second hitting Vietnam this year, landslides and flooding have hit some hamlets in Chieng Den commune, damaging 87 houses. Of which. 39 houses in Phieng Nghe hamlet were deeply flooded and isolated.

Immediately after the floods, Chieng Den commune mobilized forces to help residents move property to safe places. Households with flooded houses have been arranged to stay at the houses of relatives and cultural houses in neighboring hamlets.

The flooding has lasted for nine days, with the water level receding very slowly.

Many houses and assets of residents in Phieng Nghe hamlet are submerged. 

Rafts are used to move people and assets to safe places, and carry necessities to support isolated families.

Visiting and encouraging the people of Phieng Nghe hamlet, Cong requested local authorities to take solutions to provide temporary shelters for affected households and necessities for residents, absolutely avoiding hunger.

In the long term, he directed departments, agencies, and the city People's Committee to devise flood drainage plans and invest in building flood drainage systems if necessary to minimise damage caused by flooding.

In case the flood water continues to rise, the city People's Committee needs to consider resettlement plans to stabilise people's lives, he noted.

Leaders of Son La province and Son La city deliver support to people in Phieng Nghe hamlet.

The working delegation visits and encourages households with flooded houses.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Son La city presented 39 gifts, each worth 2 million VND (79.4 USD) in cash and necessities, to 39 households of Phieng Nghe hamlet that were hard hit by floods.
