The festival consists of a ritual part and a festive part. The ritual part features a new rice offering ceremony, during which the shaman performs rituals to express gratitude to ancestors, heaven and earth, praying for favourable weather, good harvests, and a prosperous life.
Meanwhile, the festive part includes cultural exchanges between cultural clubs of Yen Chau, Bac Yen and Song Ma districts and a group of Thai ethnic students in Hanoi; xoe dances; and activities to experience cultural spaces at the traditional house.
Chieng Sang has eight hamlets and 1,057 households, with the Thai ethnic group accounting for 70%. Farmers in the commune cultivate 130 hectares of rice in two crops. Every year, around the end of November, people organise a new rice festival to thank heaven and earth for the past year of favourable weather and bountiful crops.
At the same time, they offer offerings to their ancestors who have blessed their descendants and villagers with good health, happiness, and bumper harvests. In recent years, the commune has maintained the ritual to preserve, promote and introduce the good values of the homeland.
