Communications work stepped up to prevent bomb, mine accidents

Son La province’s Military Command on October 17 coordinated with the Vietnam National Mine Action Centre (VNMAC) to organise a conference on the prevention and control of accidents caused by war-left bombs, mines and unexploded ordinances (UXO).

Delegates at the conference.

Implementing the national action programme on overcoming post-war consequences of bombs and mines in accordance with Decision No. 504, the provincial Military Command worked with relevant agencies to conduct a study of bomb and mine pollution in the locality, focusing on the areas which were once battlefields during the war. Between 2015 and 2023, the Military Command joined efforts in successfully deactivating 14 bombs in Son La city and nine districts.

Statistics released by the Military Command and competent agencies in 2023 show that 1,348 hectares of land or 0.095% of the provincial area have been contaminated with bombs, mines and UXO, which are diverse in type, have a high level of danger, and originate from many different countries.

Representatives of relevant agencies discussed plan building and the implementation of communications activities to prevent accidents from bombs, mines and UXO.

The activities are expected to raise awareness and change behavior of the community, helping people live safely in the areas contaminated with bombs and mines, and gradually overcome their consequences to promote socio-economic development.
