Son La attends online national meeting in response to World AIDS Day

The Ministry of Health hosted an online meeting on November 29 to mark the World AIDS Day. Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, who also serves as Chairman of the National Committee for AIDS, Drug, and Prostitution Prevention, and representatives of ministries, agencies, and organisations attended the event, connected to 63 provinces and cities nationwide.

Prominent among Son La’s representatives was Trang Thi Xuan, Standing Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People's Committee.

This year’s National Action Month for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, running from November 10 to December 10, focuses on equality in access to HIV/AIDS prevention and control services, towards ending AIDS by 2030.

In 2024, Vietnam remains a global leader in HIV treatment, with over 97% of patients on antiretroviral (ARV) therapy achieving undetectable viral loads. Nationwide, nearly 48,000 individuals are enrolled in opioid substitution therapy, 183,000 are receiving ARV treatment, and close to 70,000 benefiting from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Son La has made significant strides in HIV/AIDS prevention and control. The province is operating 49 methadone treatment centres, 13 outpatient clinics affiliated with district and provincial hospitals, and one private clinic offering PrEP.

It counts 4,921 people living with HIV, with more than 97% receiving ARV treatment. As many as 675 individuals are on PrEP, and 1,033 are undergoing methadone therapy for opioid addiction.

In the first 10 months of 2024, local authorities carried out communication campaigns reaching 123,000 individuals, focusing on high-risk groups. Over 670,000 condoms and syringes were distributed free of charge to more than 58,000 people. HIV testing was provided to over 7,800 individuals, with 86 new cases identified.
