Son La promotes energy efficiency

After the 10-year implementation of the national target programme on energy efficiency, Son La province has recorded significant achievements in environmental protection and rational exploitation of energy resources, contributing to spurring local socio-economic development.

Students at To Hieu Secondary School in Son La city are encouraged to use electricity efficiently and economically.

Every year, the local electricity sector launches a programme in response to the "Earth Hour” campaign to promote safe and efficient electricity use among the public, with the participation of over 25,000 households. Up to 400 prizes are presented annually to families for their safe and efficient electricity practices.

Local schools have also collaborated in organising extracurricular activities focusing on safe and efficient use of electricity. Meanwhile, communes and wards have worked to raise public awareness of energy saving and rolled out some models of energy efficiency in businesses, production facilities, buildings, public places, and households.

The industry and trade sector has also joined efforts in raising the awareness of energy efficiency among households, while distributing 3,400 copies of a manual on safe and efficient electricity use to the public.

Moreover, main streets in Sơn La city are now lit up with energy-saving LED lamps and equipped with an automated power control system, resulting in a 40-50% reduction in electricity consumption.

In industrial production, the province counts 33 facilities, of which about 80% have put in place cleaner production technologies. In the agricultural sector, livestock waste is also considered a valuable kind of resources as it can be transformed into electricity and clean gas, contributing to saving electricity and raising production and business efficiency for people and enterprises. Up to 266 farms and 1,908 households in Son La province have treated livestock waste by biogas digesters, and 196 households have used bio-bedding for livestock waste treatment.

Workers of Son La Power Company are guiding customers how to use electricity safely and economically.

Besides, Son La province has paid attention to greenhouse gas emission reduction through efforts to fight deforestation and forest degradation, and create livelihoods for the community. The provincial People's Committee has issued Decision No. 2338/QD-UBND dated August 29, 2017, approving the action plan on greenhouse gas emissions reduction through measures to curb deforestation and forest degradation, and enhance forest reserves conservation and promotion.

To further materialise the national target programme on energy efficiency, the provincial Party Organisation has concretised the Politburo’s Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW dated February 11, 2020 regarding strategic orientations for national energy development by 2030, with a vision to 2045. By 2030, renewable energy is set to account for 32% of the total primary energy supply. The locality also targets 100% of industrial and export processing zones to have concentrated wastewater treatment systems that satisfy technical standards. Its forest coverage, including fruit trees on sloping land, is expected to reach 56%. Moreover, 90% of domestic solid waste in rural areas will be collected in line with regulations.
