Son La works to build learning society

The movement to promote learning, encourage talent, and build a learning society in Son La province is growing strongly, contributing to improving public knowledge, discovering and nurturing talent, and inspiring students’ dreams. It also motivates individuals and groups with outstanding achievements to continue pursuing education and creative labour.

The Lo family in Ba Nhat 1 hamlet, Thom Mon commune, Thuan Chau district has a strong tradition of valuing education.

The Lu family in Son La city, consisting of 31 households and over 130 members living in Panh and Hum hamlets of Chieng Xom commune, has long been recognised as a model of educational excellence. Lu Van Binh, the head of the family, shared that the family currently has 39 children studying at schools ranging from preschool to high school, eight attending universities, and one pursuing a master's degree. Additionally, 36 family members work as officials, civil servants, and public employees in state agencies and the armed forces, serving as role models for younger generations to follow.

In Thuan Chau district, the district Association for Promoting Education was awarded the Outstanding Emulation Flag by the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education in 2024, for its achievements in promoting learning, encouraging talent, and building a learning society. According to Giang Van Dap, head of the district association, many ethnic minority families in mountainous and disadvantaged areas have successfully developed effective learning movements. Notable examples include the Lo family in Ba Nhat 1 hamlet, Thom Mon commune; the Thao, Mua, and Sung families in Long He commune; and the Lau family in Nam Giat hamlet, Phong Lai commune.

In the province, there are 12 associations for promoting education at the district, city, and township levels; 200 associations at the commune, ward, and town levels; and more than 4,600 branches. Each year, the provincial Association for Promoting Education effectively implements the directions of the Government and the province regarding learning and talent promotion. It also organises campaigns to raise public awareness and gather donations for the "To Hieu Scholarship Fund" and presents scholarships to outstanding students.

According to Mai Thu Huong, Chairwoman of the provincial Association for Promoting Education, last year, associations at all levels coordinated with relevant parties to organise 145 training courses on learning promotion for more than 5,100 local officials. They also partnered with commune-level community learning centers to open 180 classes on science and technology transfer, production models, literacy programmes, and Thai language teaching classes, attracting over 10,300 participants. Scholarship awarding and commendations have been consistently maintained, with the total provincial learning promotion fund now exceeding 31 billion VND (1.2 million USD). In 2024 alone, more than 23,300 individuals and collectives with outstanding achievements were honoured.

These results serve as motivation for communities to continue fostering the movement to promote learning, encourage talent, and build a learning society—closely linked with building a cultural lifestyle, developing new-style rural areas and civilised urban areas, and strengthening the great national unity.
