Thuan Chau highland celebrates Independence Day

The Co Ma upland market fair is an annual event held on the occasion of National Day (September 2), where Mong, Thai, Kho Mu and Ha La ethnic people from Muong Bam, Long He, E Tong, Pa Long, Co Tong and Co Ma communes gather to meet, exchange and celebrate the Independence Day.

From early morning, in all ways from Provincial Road 108 to the Co Ma upland market, many people wore colorful traditional costumes. People came to the highland market on September 2 to buy and sell, exchange goods, meet relatives, share stories about production, immerse themselves in the cultural space, and enjoy unique dishes.

The market fair took place in two days (September 1 and 2). Previously, the People's Committee of Co Ma commune coordinated with their counterparts in Muong Bam, Long He, E Tong, Pa Long, and Co Tong communes to prepare booths to display local products. Art groups and sport teams practiced hard to perform and compete in traditional sports.

The banh giay (round glutinous rice cake) pounding contest attracts a large number of people.

Immediately after the opening of the market fair, residents in six highland communes participated in cultural, art and sports competitions, and traditional folk games such as badminton, volleyball, panpipe playing, and banh giay (round glutinous rice cake) pounding, tug of war, tu lu and pa pao. There were a quiz on the Law on Marriage and Family and the Law on Gender Equality; screenings of movies dubbed in Mong and Thai languages, featuring the revolution, the Party, President Ho Chi Minh, homeland and country; and events to popularise the guidelines and policies of the Party and State.

This year's market fair was full of essential goods for people’s production and daily life. Many stalls sold traditional production tools such as knives, hoes, sickles, baskets and brocade items of the Mong people. In addition, many traditional products like docynia, cucumber, black chicken, banh giay, and corn wine were also offered for sale.

The market fair attracts a large number of shoppers.

At the market fair, the district Division of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the Linh Nang Mai official, specializing in content creation and channel building training on Tiktok and Facebook platforms, in organising livestreams to promote Son tra (Hawthorn) and vinegar and chili sauce made from this fruit, as well as OCOP (One Commune One Product) products of the district, including Minh Tri Arabica coffee, Tong Co smoked meat, Phong Lai honey, Thu Dan Oolong tea, Chieng La smoked carp and Trong Nguyen tea.

Compared to previous years, this year's market fair attracted more people and tourists.

The weekly highland market fair is a place where highlanders exchange goods. But for many decades, on the occasion of the Independence Day, Thuan Chau district has assigned Co Ma commune to organize a special market fair with many cultural, art and sports activities to strengthen solidarity among people of ethnic groups. At the same time, it aims to introduce the potential, strengths, typical agricultural and handicraft products, and traditional cultural values, in order to seek opportunities to connect with businesses to build and develop tourism, especially cultural tourism and experiential tourism in the district's highland communes.
