Tong Lanh commune’s Village 2 – first model new-style rural area in Thuan Chau district

Village 2 in Tong Lanh commune, Thuan Chau district, impresses visitors with spacious houses, concrete roads, and bustling grocery stores. All villagers are excited and proud as the village has transformed from a poor locality to a new-style rural area, also the first model new rural area in Thuan Chau.

Roads in Village 2 have been cemented.

Village 2 is located right at the foot of Chieng Pac Pass. In 1975, in response to the Party's appeal, more than 70 young men and women who were outstanding Party and youth union members of Thai Binh, Hung Yen, and Ha Tay (now Hanoi) volunteered to move to the village to build a new economic region.

In the first days, it was hard to travel in Thuan Chau. However, thanks to the consensus and determination of locals, as well as the attention and investment of the Party and State, many infrastructure projects were rolled out in the village. Notably, National Highway 6 and Provincial Road 107 were upgraded, prompting local residents to move closer to the roads to facilitate business and trade. Thanks to that, their living standards have been improved.

Now, Village 2 has become a bright spot in economic development in tandem with new-style rural area building. Over 70% of local households have engaged in business activities, offering groceries, electronics, motorbikes and building materials, along with repair and catering services. The village is home to three cooperatives and enterprises, each with annual revenue ranging from 700 million VND (28,492 USD) to 2 billion VND. Its per capita income exceeds 72 million VND each year. There are only four poor households which consist of the elderly living alone and people with disabilities. The proportion of households classified as well-off reaches more than 60%. All households have access to safe electricity and clean water for daily needs. There are no temporary houses in the village, and 80% of the families have won the cultural status for three consecutive years.

As many as 189 households in the village have contributed money and work hours to new-style rural area building. With 1.2 billion VND sourced from the State coffer, along with 400 million VND and over 1,000 work days contributed by local residents, the village has upgraded its infrastructure system. To date, all main roads have been asphalted and cemented. All households have ensured hygiene in their residential areas, with five concentrated waste collection venues. Security and order have been well maintained, with no drug-related cases or social problems detected in the village. Sport and art movements have been promoted, with six sport and three art teams gathering over 60 members.

In late September, Tong Lanh commune announced that Village 2 had been recognised as a new-style area, and a model in terms of rural culture. The recognition has created momentum for local residents to boost production and household economic development, thus building their homeland more beautifully and prosperously./.
